National Youth day is celebrated on January 12 to celebrate the birth anniversary of India's great philosopher and thinker Swami Vivekananda. The Day is commemorated across the country to celebrate the ideals and teachings of Swami Vivekananda. Several programes like speeches, youth festivals, seminars, Yogasanas, essay competitions and recitations are organised at schools and colleges every year on this day.
Swami Vivekanand was born on January 12, 1863 in Kolkata. The spiritual leader and social reformer spent all his life as social reformer, philosopher, author, religious teacher. His teachings and philosophy have had a significant impact on eradicating child marriage and illiteracy from India.
The government of India had declared the day as the National Youth Day in 1984 to honour and cherish his ideals, teachings and contributions, and encourage youth to follow his footsteps.
