Maa review: ‘Maa Kasam’ what a squandering of talents on a plot that's lethargic, uninspiring and triggers unintentional laughs than shivers
‘Maa’ the debut of Kajol in the horror genre and sequel to ‘Shaitan’'s Universe directed by Vishal Furia is a lethargic, uninspiring waste of talents that instead of providing chills, boils your ‘rakht’ in this horror inspired from the story of ‘Raktabija’ - the ‘asur’ (demon) according to religious Hindu purans (ancient literature).
Maa movie synopsis
Ambika (Kajol) visits the native place of her husband Shuvankar (Inderneil Sengupta) after his mysterious death along with her daughter Shweta (Kherin Sharma), the village is said to be haunted by a demon who is kidnapping young teenage girls.
The premise quickly crumbles under writer Saiwyan Quadras and director Vishal Furia lethargic and unexciting handling of this weak and predictable script.
Thankfully, the actors don’t disappoint and try their best but this equivocal mix of Rakhtabij asur, Maa Durga and protection of girl child loses control as the film progresses.
The only time I felt the scares was when Kajol’s car gets chased. We all are aware of the talents Vishal Furia has in the horror/supernatural genre, he has made his mark by choosing Indian rooted stories/folklore but here he keeps on stumbling.
Kajol acts as per the script and she does justice but such roles she can do anytime.
Other actors like Indraneil, Gopal, Dibyendu are competent.
Ronit Roy gets a good scope and he does well.
And last but not the least, Kherin Sharma is very good.
Final words
‘Maa’ This vague amalgamation of Rakhtabij Asur, Girl Child protection, lacks scares, originality, doesn’t dwell much in its religious imagery and uses known gimmicks and antics in well-designed set pieces and CGI which is sometimes good sometimes bad. Further, there is a hint of third installment coming. I admire the innocence of the makers which is soaked in overconfidence.
Going with 2 stars out of five for this sheer waste.
Produced by Ajay Devgn, Jyoti Deshpande, Jio Studios and co-produced by Kumar Mangat Pathak.
‘Maa’ is running in theatres from June 27, 2025.
