Metro...In Dino movie review

Like ‘Life in a... Metro’, in ‘Metro...In Dino’ as well, the nine characters get interlocked in a complicated ride of

infidelity, insecurity and guilt. At times irresistible, at times flawed, at time powerful and at times confused and struggling, Anurag Basu’s ‘Metro… In Dino’ the spiritual sequel to his 2007 anthology Life in a... Metro gets more intense and complicated. Anurag Basu has a unique neck of presenting his characters and here also he does it fabulously. Be it the happy go lucky, care free travel blogger Aditya Roy Kapur or the ultra-confused and somewhat timid Sara Ali Khan who is fun when drunk. The middle age Pankaj Tripathi looking for a fling on dating app or the bored aged housewife Neena Gupta who suddenly finds wings when she receives an invitation of her college reunion.

They live in different cities but somewhere they share their loss, guilt, remorse as they long for that love and companionship in these crowed and competitive cities.

They are flawed, they make mistakes and after infatuation, lust, angst, tears and heartbreaks, they find some peace as they rediscover their love. As a character says, “Kabhi Kabhi Pyar Kam Ho Jata Hai Toh Usko Phir Pehle Jaisa Karne Ke Liye Us Vyakti ko Baar Baar Pyaar Karna Padta Hai”(rough translation – to keep the love intact, you have to keep loving the same person again and again).

Of Course, the rocker sutradhar Pritam is here again narrating the story in his way singing at bus stops, terrace tops, metro stations etc and surprise, surprise – the actors do hum as well – how KL Saigal, Noor Jahan, Suraiya in 2025 is that.

Interestingly, ‘Life in a Metro’ belonged to Irrfan Khan and Konkona Sen Sharma and after eighteen years in its spiritual sequel, the story revolving around Konkana Sen Sharma and Pankaj Tripathi is the best. Both playing middle aged couples going through middle age crises and landing in funny, charming and heart-breaking situations are real delight and major highlight of ‘Metro...In Dino’

Ironically, Anurag Basu’s fetish for couple getting intimate on terrace continues and sadly the Aditya Roy Kapur and Sara Ali Khan’s story that began on a very promising note has a predictable conclusion.

Performances

Anupam Kher is competent. Neena Gupta is fantastic. Konkona Sen Sharma is outstanding. Pankaj Tripathi is excellent. Aditya Roy Kapur is charming. Fatima Sana Shaikh gives a strong performance. Ali Fazal is very good. Sara Ali Khan is fabulous. Saswata Chatterjee is good. Kush Jotwani makes his presence felt.

Technicalities

Production values are topnotch. Cinematography by Abhishek Basu and Anurag Basu is classy, elegant and colorful. Editing by Bodhaditya Banerjee and Satish Gowda is fine. Music by Pritam has two take homes - ."Aur Mohabbat Kitni Karoon" written by Sandeep Shrivastava and sang by Arijit Singh. "Mausam" written by Qaisar-Ul-Jafri, Sandeep Shrivastava and sang by Arijit Singh.

Metro...In Dino movie review – final words

Each story in ‘Metro...In Dino’ has the strength and emotional chord to turn into full-length features, after two hours and thirty-nine minutes of ‘Metro...In Dino’ something stays in your mind, Anurag Basu’s panorama of human experience has made something wonderful on screen.

Going with a loving four stars out of five. 4/5

Produced by T-Series Films and Anurag Basu Productions and distributed by AA films, ‘Metro...In Dino’ is scheduled to release on 4 July, 2025 in theatres.
