Ufff Yeh Siyapaa review: Wacky, Funny, Joy Ride

‘Ufff Yeh Siyapaa’ – Award winning filmmaker G. Ashok’s brave experiment – a silent comedy thriller is a rare experience in this age of sound and fury where everyone has a voice and has something to say. The A.R. Rahman wordless musical comedy of errors starring Sohum Shah, Nushrratt Bharuccha, Nora Fatehi, Omkar Kapoor and Sharib Hashmi has the quirks and wacky fun, if you are ready for a ‘silent’ joy ride.

Ufff Yeh Siyapaa movie synopsis

Kesari Lal Singh (Sohum Shah), a karamchari (employee) in the bijli vibhag (electrical department) is leading a life with his wife, kid and that oomphy padosan (neighbor) Kamini (Nora Fatehi). Constantly quarrelling with his wife Pushpa and watching Kamini with sensuous desires in mind, one day Pushpa fed up with this behavior of his pati (husband) leaves him and goes to her maika (parent’s house) with her kid. the pati Keasri initially tries to convince Pushpa to come back home but fails. Suddenly he realizes that he has a chance to enjoy his freedom and goes on a fun-loving spree. In between all this, a drug parcel gets wrongly delivered to his home leading to a chain of weird, quirky events. Enters Police Inspector Hasmukh (Omkar Kapoor) a fan of Salman Khan’s Chulbul character from ‘Dabangg’ adding to the madness. A series of wildly absurd, darkly comic chain of events follow without a single dialogue spoken on screen.

Ufff Yeh Siyapaa movie review

Remember the 1987 classic silent black comedy ‘Pushpaka Vimana’ by the maverick Singeetam Srinivasa Rao starring the legendary Kamal Haasan in lead. Filmmaker G. Ashok (Nandi Award for best child film as debut ‘Ushodayam’ (2007), the money spinner coming of age ‘Pilla Zamindar’ (2011) and the super hit horror ‘Bhaagamathie’ (2018). G. Ashok graduates from a from a children’s film to coming of age to horror and now gets ambitious with a quirky wacky silent comedy thriller ‘Ufff Yeh Siyapaa’ that scores on moments, quirks and delightful performances.

Initially in the beginning, it may feel awkward but gradually for those who have an appetite for something different on-screen won’t mind the absence of dialogues and verbal communication and enjoy the power of the visual language. Each second of the frame speaks and A.R. Rahman’s music blends with the atmosphere nicely.

But there is a catch, God knows why G. Ashok has to restore to the common practice of having an item type number in this silent thriller. Nora is the reason and or push and pull of art and commerce is the reason.

Plus, ‘Ufff Yeh Siyapaa’ is a joy ride if you have the appetite for such dialogue less experiments and quirks but it lacks the depth of class divide seen in Kamal Haasan’s 1987 starrer Pushpak and/or the class of the 2011 modern classic ‘The Artiste’ by the French filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius that celebrated the magic of American cinema during the silent era in a profound and unforgettable way.

Performances are of high order over here

Sohum Shah as Kesarilal Singh is wonderful.

Nushtratt Bharuccha as Pushpa is fabulous and spins a surprise.

Nora Fatehi as Kamini is alluring.

Omkar Kapoor as Hasmukh is amusing.

Sharib Hashmi as Gungra – a thug looking for that parcel is funny.

Ashok Pathak – the famous Binod from Panchayat series has a very short role but it’s really filled with quirky fun.

Ufff Yeh Siyapaa movie review – movie review final words

In today’s time of voices, noises from all over ‘Ufff Yeh Siyapaa’ is a weird relief. Imagine The great Charlie Chaplin has to collaborate with the Bazmee and Dhavan’s of Bollywood, its weird like having Masala Dosa with chutney and sambhar along with Rum. But no gham (worries), if you gave the appetite then it can be fun.
