Vash Vivash Level 2 review: A terrifying tale of mass possession that's fashioned as a zombie horror!
‘Vash Vivash Level 2’ - Within a few minutes, a busy and bustling girls' high school turns into a scene of frenzied and ghastly occurring when ten girls suddenly line up over the school's terrace and jump off from it. An extremely bizarre and unexplainable scenario ever witnessed by anybody but there is a prelude to it.
The phenomenon alludes to 'vashikaran' which translates to possession and control by a man with sinister intentions - that spreads unprecedented panic among teachers and staff, parents, police and media.
Vash Vivash Level 2 movie review
Writer-director Krishna Dev Yagnik creates a terrifying sense of dread while staging the mass possession - girls becoming numb and breathing heavily, relying on an ominous background score that sends a chilling down the spine. A great start and a formidable buildup of the chief nemesis but doesn't quite work during the second hour.
‘Vash Vivash Level 2’ is ambitious and achieves a larger scale with the 'weaponized' girls creating havoc in the city. Yes, there is an uncanny resemblance to last week's Hollywood horror ‘Weapons’ but Krishnadev Yagnik is no Zach Cregger.
‘Vash Vivash Level 2’ is a sincere follow up but not as overwhelming as its predecessor.
The thrill doesn't sustain in the second hour. The weakest link in the enterprise is Hiten Kumar. Clearly, fading out in front of Hitu Kanodia's brooding restraint, Kumar's performance is loud, excessively theatrical and irrationally eccentric.
Clearly suggesting a deficiency of writing chops, the narrative struggles to balance between control and collapse. Its Janki Bodiwala who leaves a deafening impact with her short presence and one scene that exemplifies the entire emotional core of the film.
‘Vash Vivash Level 2’ leaves us at a point where you can think of multiple iterations and instalments, given the nature of its subject. The idea is bang-on, but the treatment needs to improve.
I go with 3 stars.
