Batwara 1947 trailer review: Sunny Deol is swashbuckling in his reunion with Rajkumar Santoshi

The trailer of ‘Batwara 1947’ is out and it stamps and prints the belief that Sunny Deol is the real last action hero standing tall amongst his contemporaries.

There are certain things in Bollywood which only Sunny Paaji can do and create gadar (read awesome/super excitement amongst his fans.

‘Batwara 1947’ trailer is the latest example. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi who along with Sunny Deol ruled the Indian box office during nineties with super-duper blockbusters like Ghayal (1990), Damini (1993) Ghatak (1996) are getting re united after thirty-six years to recreate their magic on the box office.

The trailer of ‘Batwara 1947’ seems to be perfect in realising the dream. Set in Lahore against the backdrop of the 1947 partition of India and Pakistan leading to the division of Punjab, ‘Batwara 1947’ is based on Asghar Wajahat's drama ‘Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai’ (rough translation – if you have not seen Lahore then you are not born) which philosophically is borrowed from the old Punjabi adage which means, "Experiencing Lahore is so fundamental to a fulfilling life that not seeing it is akin to not truly living or being born".

Showcasing a perfect balance between high octane action, emotion, patriotism and humanity that questions the rigid fanaticism based on religion, ‘Batwara 1947’ trailer opens with Sunny Deol as Sikander Mirza and his wife Hamida Mirza (Preity Zinta) exchanging greetings on the occasion of India’s freedom.

But the evil partition violence creates havoc on Mirza’s and they get displaced from their home to an apartment allotted by the system only to find an old Hindu woman Mai (Shabana Azmi) already living there.

Apart from Sunny Deol, Shabana Azmi and Preity Zinta, ‘Batwara 1947’ also stars Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, Khushi Hajare, and Kanikka Kapur in pivotal roles.

‘Batwara 1947’ music has been composed by AR Rahman, with lyrics by Javed Akhtar.
