Exclusive -Bollywood Decoded: How much will be Saiyaara ‘real’ collection? Will SOS 2 have an edge over Dhadak 2?, veteran Industry market expert spills the beans
The unprecedented success to YRF’s ‘Saiyaara’ starring new comers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda has made the biggies/superstars biting their nails in disbelief.
The Mohit Suri directed love story is alleged by a section of people to be a copy of the 2004 Korean film 'A Moment to Remember'. Interestingly, the Korean film itself is an unofficial remake of the 2001 Japanese television drama 'Pure Soul'.
Coming back to ‘Saiyaara’ the movie as per reports have collected around one hundred and thirty crores in five days and at the time of writing this article the movie has collected around two cores on its sixth day.
On one hand the box office collection of ‘Saiyaara’ is bringing in cheers while on the other hand there are doubts raised about the figures shown by the makers and allegations of bulk/corporate booking, manipulation, inflated figures are making considerable buzz in the market.
Even if we discard the given collections by fifty percent, at this stage when the biggest of names struggle to give even a ten-core opening, the collection of around 65 cores (half of what is claimed) in six days for ‘Saiyaara’ which has no big names is something to think and ponder upon.
The so called ‘Tsunami’ in the name of ‘Saiyaara’ has indeed given learning lessons for Bollywood. The ‘Saiyaara’ wave has even forced the so called ‘dark horse’ of the industry – Ajay Devgn to postponed his up coming comedy ‘Son Of Sardaar 2’ – the spiritual sequel of his 2012 money spinner ‘Son Of Sardaar’ which clashed with Yash Chopra’s last kiss on the silver screen – ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ starring Shah Rukh Khan.
Interestingly, that time Ajay Devgn stuck to his guns and didn’t postponed/preponed his SOS, but this time with no great names like Yashji and SRK, Ajay Devgn easily agreed to postponed his film.
What makes ‘Saiyaara’ such a wave, are the collections really real, and will the postponement of SOS 2 will help Ajay Devgn as SOS 2 will clash with ‘Dhadak 2’ – another intense love story.
Will the comedy SOS 2 will have edge over the intense ‘Dhadak 2’ coming after the traditional classic and intense Saiyaara?. How much will ‘Saiyaara’ earn from the Indian box office?
How will the common people – the junta – the audience who makes and breaks a film and a star genuinely know about the real actual collections. is this the high time the Hindi film industry needs a regulatory body which scrutinizes the showed collections and confirm whether its true or fake. Will there be any transparency regarding the box office collection between the production houses and the audience – the manufacturer and the consumer.
Cineblues spoke with veteran Bollywood market and trade expert Mr. Narendra Gupta who spilled the beans and decoded the Bollywood trade practices, predicting the outcome of the ‘Son Of Sardaar 2’ v/s ‘Dhadak 2’ clash, Mr Gupta strongly demanded the need of a regulatory body to scrutinize the collection figures shown by the makers/distributors and put an end to the fake/corporate/bulk/inflated bookings for the benefit of all.
Over to Mr. Narendra Gupta
CIB: How much will Saiyaara end up on Indian box office
Narendra Gupta: ‘Saiyaara’ lifetime can be three hundred cores plus looking at the trend, interestingly Yash Raj Films has not shared detailed box office figures. We will have to see how ‘Saiyaara’ performs in its second week.
CIB: Do you think the collections of ‘Saiyaara’ are manipulated/inflated/fake? what you have to say about these allegations.
Narendra Gupta: This unholy practice of showing exaggerated/fake/inflated numbers passed its limits during the release of Maddock films. In my opinion the collections of ‘Stree 2’ and ‘Chhava’ especially where highly inflated. Am not saying they didn’t do well, they did well, in my opinion ‘Chhava’ has earned two hundred plus net but the figures shown are seven hundred cores plus. The trend started by Maddock continued. ‘Pathaan’, ‘Jawan’, ‘Animal’, ‘Sky Force’, ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ etc etc everybody started showing inflated exaggerated numbers. The mind-blowing collections of ‘Saiyaara’ naturally is creating doubt and curiosity.
What can be done to bring in transparency and faith back into the industry and the public in general
Its high time we have a legal regulatory body to check all the huge claims of box office collections by production houses and distributors. The body should have experts from the film industry, finance ministry and judiciary.
Ajay Devgn has postponed SOS 2 to give ‘Saiyaara’ open space?, will Ajay Devgn’s comedy have an edge over ‘Dhadak 2’ – an intense love story starring youngsters soon after ‘Saiyaara’?.
Narendra Gupta: Depends on the level of comedy in SOS 2, ‘Son Of Sardaar 2’ has to be really crazy and LOL throughout to guarantee success to Ajay Devgn. The trailer has not given me much hopes but I hope the movie may have much more laughter.
‘Dhadak 2’ – the spiritual sequel to ‘Dhadak’ (2018) – the remake of the Marathi blockbuster ‘Sairat’ by Nagraj Manjule that starred Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor.
‘Dhadak 2’ starring Triptii Dimri and Siddhant Chaturvedi in the lead roles is a remake of the Tamil film ‘Pariyerum Perumal’ which has won several awards and it is a very tough challenge.
CIB: In your opinion what has made ‘Saiyaara’ click in such a big way? Even if we discard fifty percent of the said collections, it is still an achievement which cannot be ignored at all?
Narendar Gupta: strong youth appeal, connect with Gen X, music and no promotion shor gul halla gulla, had made ‘Saiyaara’ connect with its target audience, especially in Tier 2, Tier 3 centers. It’s an encouraging sign.
CIB: So ultimately in the end, it’s the same what those old wise men use to say ‘Content Is The King’
Narendra Gupta: Yes, ‘Content will always remain the King’ look at recent Hollywood releases – ‘Jurrasic World Rebirth’, ‘F1 The Movie’, ‘Superman’ all are winners at box office, what extra noise does a Hollywood release does for its promotion before release… tell me. Look at the collections. there are takers, just give them what they want?
