Detective Sherdil review: Diljit Dosanjh charms this snaky mystery with lighthearted humour

‘Detective Sherdil’ - Diljit Dosanjh charms this lighthearted tribute to Agatha Christie designed to suit the loyal fans of Diljit Dosanjh and lovers of the mystery with comedy genre. Directed by Ravi Chhabriya, ‘Detective Sherdil’ is no ‘Pink Panther’ or ‘Naked Gun’ but still its fun.

Detective Sherdil movie synopsis

A flamboyant billionaire business tycoon Pankaj Bhatti (Boman Irani) is shot in his car and then the car gets blown in Budapest. The police arrest a drug addict Luca (Grant Huggair) for the murder who confesses that he has committed the crime in hate. But things are different from what is seen from the naked eyes and Detective Sherdil (Diljit Dosanjh) an unorthodox, easy going, cool, mouth organ playing razor-sharp sleuth with a flair for solving the unsolvable is assigned to handle the case. Detective Sherdil along with Natasha (Diana Penty), a poised and brilliant investigator dig deeper into the tangled web of family secrets and fingers get pointed towards multiple suspects – from Purvak (Arjun Tanwar) Bhatti’s accountant (who is now absconding), to Bhatti’s wife Rajeshwari (Ratna Pathak Shah), son Angad (Summet Vyas) and daughter Shanti (Banita Sandhu).

In the web of betrayals, lust, greed, zealously etc, the case gets into snaky turns, who is the killer?, what was the motive behind the killing?, with his intuition as keen as his wit, ‘Detective Sherdil’ must uncover all the secrets and come out with the truth.

Detective Sherdil movie review

The best part of ‘Detective Sherdil’ is that though it deeply relies on Diljit Dosnajh’s fan following, the comedy mystery has a decent premise – story jointly written by the director Ravi Chhabriya and the producer Ali Abbas Zafar with screenplay by Sagar Bajaj and the producer again – Ali Abbas Zafar, the treatment/direction by Ravi Chhabriya is passable (if not entirely forgettable).

Those who look for a harmless, lighthearted fun with some mystery and don’t have high expectations nor they want to experience the polished artistic minutes in storytelling/narration, ‘Detective Sherdil’ will satisfy them. It doesn’t matter whether the script relies on sitcom-level gender stereotypes, it has a hold on its ‘target’ audience and the movie moves smoothly.

The old school charm of murder mysteries read and/or seen on small/big screen is felt. A mix of Christie, Sherlock, Karamchand, Byomkesh and all, ‘Detective Sherdil’ sees the protagonist Diljit Dosnajh nicely placed and comfortable in delivering his acts with wits. Diana Penty as Natasha Diljit’s colleague adds her glamour and has some moments as well.

Boman Irani leaves his mark, debutant Arjun Tanwar who plays Purvak impresses. Banita Sandhu as Shanti is quite good. Whereas Ratna Pathak Shah as Rajeshwari is as usual, Summet Vyas as Angad and Grant Huggair as Luca are competent.

And last but not the least, Kashmira Irani Saxena makes a striking impression.

It seems that the makers, the actors are all aware about what they are doing and for whom they are making this comedy mystery.
