Homecoming review: A Musical Reassurance Of Life & Its Prejudice

What: Soumyajit Majumdar’s reunion in his debut directorial is a musical reassurance of life and its prejudice and a nostalgic ode to Calcutta.

OTT movie Homecoming review

Its Navami night, the ninth day of Durga Puja - Dussehra. A motley group of friends associated with theatre group Amra (We) which was built on passion unite after some years.

They meet at Amra – an old building by the River Ganges which will now be converted into a heritage hotel.

A poet, an actress, a diva, a singer etc assemble and get nostalgic about their past, the beauty of Calcutta is rekindle, the angst of separation – separation from the freedom, art, for materialistic gain, the things, people they loved, the meta of Amra converted into a heritage hotel used to convey the transformation.

Soumyajit Majumdar’s debut directorial Homecoming is a diary of emotions of different people in different situation united by a common passion Amra (We) consoled by soothing music.

Godot (Soham Majumdar) who has a career in USA, Sri (Sayani Gupta) a film actress, Nargis (Plabita), Imroze (Hussain Dalal) who had an affair with Sri but they broke up and when they meet again at the reunion Imroze is getting intimate with a girl, “this used to be our secret” Sri confronts Imroze and from here the debate on past, present and future gets interesting.

What strikes the most is the acceptance (a rare phenomenon nowadays), realization of mistakes, the coming of age feeling and emergence of hope that takes place during the final moments.

Soumyajit Majumdar’s smooth narration, relatable characters, stirring music by Sameer Rahat, Mou Sultana, Satyaki Banerjee, Dev Arijit, Neil Mukherjee, K Mohan, Amrita Singh, Rashmeet Kaur, Soumyajit Majumdar, makes Homecoming a pleasant watch.

Final words

This may sound pleasantly weird; Homecoming somewhat for a second gave me two flashes – Farhan Akhtar’s Dil Chahata Hai and Govind Nihalani’s Party.

Soumyajit Majumdar’s Homecoming is Dil Chahata hai from Amra meeting after few years at a kind of Nihalani’s Party in Calcutta with some soothing music and hope.
