The Serpent Queen releasing exclusively on Lionsgate Play
Based on the critically hailed biography, Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France by Leonie Frieda, “The Serpent Queen” tells the story of Catherine de Medici who, against all odds, became one of the most powerful and longest-serving rulers in French history. Written by Justin Haythe who also serves as Executive Producer, the series stars two-time Academy Award nominee Samantha Morton and the Game of Thrones fame, Amrita Acharia in prominent roles. The show is set to stream exclusively on Lionsgate Play from 21st October 2022.

The Serpent Queen is an engrossing tale of one of the most influential women ever to wear a crown and dives deep into the early life of Catherine de Medici who is married into the 16th-century French court as an orphaned teenager. The series explores how with her intelligence and determination, manages to keep her marriage alive and masters the bloodsport of monarchy better than anyone else.

Sharing his thoughts on the lead and how the show has aspects of relatability, Executive Producer, Justin Haythe, said, “My hope is that she appeals as a very modern and unique anti-hero while the show delivers on the pleasures of the genre of a royal show, which is, like all great drama, essentially a domestic drama with the elevated stakes of executions, war, and struggles for power. After all, the best period shows are ones we see ourselves in.”

The cast of the show also includes Enzo Cilenti as Ruggieri, Barry Atsma as Montmorency, Nicholas Burns as Antoine de Bourbon, Danny Kirrane as Louis de Bourbon, Charles Dance as Pope Clement, Ludivine Sagnier as Diane, Liv Hill as Young Catherine, Kiruna Stamell as Mathilde and Colm Meaney as King Francis. The series will also be executive produced by Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2) and Erwin Stoff (The Matrix, 13 Hours, Edge of Tomorrow).
