Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein Review : Saheb, Beti or Ek Lover

What: Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein is a desi crime thriller cum romantic drama born from Shah Rukh Khan and brought up by Kashyap, Bhardwaj, Dhulia, that changes the entire ‘hulia’(look, appearance, feel) in the end.

OTT web series Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein synopsis

Vikrant (Tahir Raj Bhasin) is an engineering aspirant from a small town Hindi heartland. Vikrant and Shikha (Shweta Tripathi) his college colleague are in love.

But Shikha and Vikrant are unaware that Purva (Anchal Singh) daughter of the State Baahubali Akheraj Awasthi (Saurabh Shukla) is obsessed with Vikrant since childhood.

OTT web series Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein review

Created and directed by Sidharth Sengupta, Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein may be a weird combo of Shah Rukh Khan’s characters in Darr (obsession), DDLJ (that palat palat thingies) and Baazigar (the title inspired from that song in Baazigar) and brought up by the radical pujaris of pulp, blood, gore - Kashyap, Bhardwaj, Dhulia now followed by one more.

The name of the fictional town where this story takes place is Onkara (dham dham dhadam dhadiya re…samaj aa raha hai bhaiya re). chalo aage badhtein hai.

Loved Undekhi so am no hater of such genre but all this chopping, cutting people into pieces then throwing them into the river and if that was not enough pour acid on top of it needed some establishment and better conviction.

Here Sidharth Sengupta with his team of writers and directors Rohit Jugraj, Ankkitha Maithy, Varun Badola and Anahata Menon (writer only) falters and keeps faltering, that’s sad.

I liked the subplot where Vikrant's family looks upon as Akheraj as their God. The superbly talented Brijendra Kala as Suryakant – father of Vikrant who works as an accountant and bows to Akheraj since Vikrant was five years old. The family is indebted by Akheraj’s generosity but is naïve to his ugly cruelty and dominant nature.

However the family comes and goes as per the makers convenience and suddenly in just one scene from the eight episodes Suryakant has a change of heart.

Things change on screen like a toddler plays with a television remote control and travels from that Onkara to the heavenly beautiful Ladakh. Oh yes there are some ‘dark’ touches as well.

Cinematography by Murzy Pagdiwala is eye candy and eye popping. The background music by Shivam Sengupta and Anuj Danait is good.

Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein performance and final words

Performance

The toast for saving this Netflix’s series Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein from the great Indian roast goes to Saurabh Shukla and Brijendra Kala and Arunoday Singh to a certain extent.

Unfortunately Tahir Raj Bhasin fails to impress and gives an impression that he is miscast.

Anchal Singh is strictly passable. Shweta Tripathi is fantastic but horribly wasted. Surya Sharma as Purva’s uncle Dharmesh is mostly a one expression wonder.

The existence of Anant Joshi as Vikrant’s friend Golden whose wardrobes colors are inspired by Falooda is not clear.

Final words

Am still surprised why this song from Salman Khan’s Judwa didn’t make it. There is some uncanny resemblance to the plot of Netflix Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein which goes like

Kabhi uff, kabhi haaye, Kabhi haaye, kabhi bye, Kabhi aaye, kabhi jaaye, Kabhi kyun, kabhi why, Kabhi yes, kabhi no, Kabhi haan, kabhi na, Raani yeh bhi koyi baat hai, Chaar din ki chandni, Phir kaali raat hai, Dhal jaayegi yeh jawani, Sochne ki baat hai, Haan! Duniya mein aaye ho to love kar lo, Thoda sa jee lo, thoda thoda mar lo.

May be used in the follow up and yes I confess, I liked the hook in the end. Toh all well that’s ends well.
