RRR: in conversation with the magical genius S.S. Rajamouli

RRR has tremendous repeat values; people will watch it again and again, says S.S. Rajamouli – the master filmmaker.

Ready with his most highly anticipated RRR, the maverick genius blessed with an impeccable Midas touch S. S. Rajamouli speaks about the expectations, balancing stars like NTR and Charan, working with the likes of Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn and box office prediction.

Expectations on RRR are giving me nightmares

RRR is all set for a mammoth release on the 25th of this month and Rajamouli is busy promoting the film. When asked how tense he is about the film, he says "There are huge expectations on the film from everyone and they are giving me nightmares. I am eagerly waiting to see how the audience will receive the film as it is a very risky subject".

The idea of RRR had been with me forever

When asked how he got the basic idea of RRR, Rajamouli says "I always look up to superheroes and when I used to see Hollywood biggies, I always felt why not have an Indian version of it. That is the time I felt taking freedom fighters from Telugu states and putting them in an extraordinary situation. So, I took Alluri Seetarama Raju from AP and Bheem from Telangana and set up RRR.

Reason behind casting Jr NTR and Ram Charan

When asked how he got an idea of roping in Ram Charan and Jr NTR, Rajamouli said "Not many know that Ram Charan and Jr NTR have been closest friends for the longest time. Ram Charan is a volcano of emotions who keeps them inside. That is the reason I chose him for Ram. As Jr NTR is loud and has a child-like mentality, he suited the role of Bheem the best".

Alia Bhatt's innocence drew me towards her

Alia Bhatt is making her debut with RRR. When asked about her, Rajamouli says, I was drawn towards the innocence of Alia. I wanted her to look innocent and when the twist comes, she explodes in a big way. So, as Alia had both the qualities, she fit the bill perfectly".

Fear of failure kept me on my toes

When asked about the biggest fear while making RRR Rajamouli says "I am very good at imagining the unthinkable. RRR is a fictional story of two freedom fighters. When I wrote the script, my vision was superb and the stars loved it completely. But I was always tense as to how I would pull this off. I was more worried about RRR than I was while making Baahubali as the execution part was quite difficult for RRR. In a way, the fear of failure kept me going".

Emotion is the biggest asset of RRR

When asked what is the biggest highlight of RRR, Rajamouli says "Emotions in the film will move you in multiple areas. The way the audience will get connected to the characters of Jr NTR and Ram Charan will be super special. There are so many moments where your heart will skip a beat as the emotional baggage is so hard in the film".

Filming the interval bang was the hardest part

When asked what was the hardest part in making RRR, he says "Canning the interval bang was the toughest part. We shot one episode for over 60 nights and it took a toll on everyone. Also, as there was Covid scares going on, things were quite intense."

Ajay Devgan was so sweet to come on board

When asked about working with Ajay Devgn, Rajamouli says "Ajay will be seen in a cameo in RRR. But his role is intense and he sets the ball rolling. When I met him, Ajay sir was more than willing to be on board. His entry will give us a new high".

RRR will take a staggering opening

When asked about the expected collections, Rajamouli says that the film will take staggering collections thanks to the hype. He also adds" there will be a lot of people who will watch the film multiple times to enjoy the emotions and thrilling ride.

Balancing characters was the toughest task

When asked about how he handled two big heroes, Rajamouli says "I never had issues with handling the stars. But balancing all the key characters was quite tough in RRR. The film will eat up a lot of time by introducing each and every character. So, balancing the story and star entries was quite difficult".
