Heads Of State review: a winningly absurd, globetrotting, action packed comedy
‘Heads Of State’ – ridiculousness rules this entertaining crowd pleaser that has the perfect balance of swashbuckling action and ‘Ott’ humour which can make you fresh if you are lover of the genre. Director Ilya Naishuller makes sure that silly, moody, messy momentum is maintained as Priyanka Chopra Jonas kicks the opponent’s ass while Idris Elba and John Cena’s buddy banter continues to bring laughs.
Heads Of State movie synopsis
The President Of The United States, Will Derringer (John Cena) and the Prime Minister Of The United Kingdom, Sam Clarke (Idris Elba) are at loggerheads with each other. While Will – the Hollywood action superstar called the ‘Water Cobra’ has made it to the America’s highest office – President. Sam on the other hand is a former SAS-trained commando and is favorite amongst his people.
Will is pissed off over Sam for some reasons while Sam thinks Will doesn,t has that ‘real’ thing in him. circumstances bring Will and Sam together. The Russian arms dealer Viktor Gradov (Paddy Considine) has an evil plan to disband NATO and execute both the President and the Prime Minister. Viktor Gradov succeeds in blowing off the plane in which the President and Prime Minister are travelling but the Heads of State survive and crash land into the forests of Belarus. What happens next. And hey, by the way where is Priyanka Chopra Jonas?!. Well Priyanka Chopra Jonas plays Noel Bisset a kick ass MI6 agent who helps the ‘Heads of State’ in spoiling Viktor Gradov’s inhuman plans.
‘Heads of State’ begins with Gypsy King’s ‘Volare’ and ends with Elvis Presley’s ‘Can't Help Falling in Love’ from the movie ‘Blue Havaii’. The Ilya Naishuller directed and Josh Appelbaum, André Nemec and Harrison Query written absurd ott action packed popcorn fun knows exactly what it is aiming for and it gets it ‘seriously’. The best part of ‘Heads of State’ is that it takes itself seriously amid all the chaos, fun, pun, gun, kicking, fighting etc.
If you love such genre then you will have a niece time in watching Idris Elba and John Cena up against each other in their funny OTT banter that reminds us of those classic buddy movies.
A movie where you don,t have to think bas enjoy the proceedings so what if the plot is filled with potholes that can even make the Mumbai roads during monsoon proud.
The spontaneity and timing of John Cena and Sam Clarke is perfect and the tongue and cheek humor is crowd pleasing.
While John Cena and Sam Clarke are busy in their tribute to the classic buddy genre, Priyanka Chopra Jonas kicks asses and comes strong in a role where she is incredible. Priyanka gets some real solid action scenes and she does it fabulously.
Actually, ‘Heads of State’ opens with Priyanka Chopra – the Spain operation is superb and Priyanka is almost till the last frame.
The idiom ‘method to madness’ truly and fully applies to ‘Heads of State’. The movie is a jolly good crowd-pleasing action comedy, why it is not releasing in theatres and having an OTT release. Why, why? Backstreet Boys ‘Tell Me Why’ is playing in my head.
Going with a well-earned 3.5 stars out of 5. 3.5/5
